Why It Matters

The walls fell down. Jarvis is no longer trapped on one machine.

This commit is the foundation of Phase 5: Everywhere. The plan was always to make Jarvis multi-device. Talk to it on the desktop, pick up the same conversation on your phone, have both devices share the same state without conflicts. CRDTs were always the theoretical answer. Today, the theory became Rust.

Two brand-new crates landed in tdd005: tdd005_sync (279 lines of Automerge CRDT operations) and tdd005_p2p (403 lines of libp2p gossipsub networking). The Gateway grew state_sync.py (165 lines), a new SQLite migration, a full set of state push/pull/json endpoints, and -- buried inside api.py -- an entire mobile companion web app rendered as a single inline HTML string. 3,914 lines added. 17 files. All suites green.

Strategic Significance: Multi-device state sync is real. Automerge CRDTs in Rust handle the merge semantics. The Gateway stores canonical per-user documents. Devices push local changes, the server merges, clients pull the result. Conflict-free by construction.

Cultural Impact: Two languages, one purpose. The Rust crates handle the hard math (CRDT merge, P2P gossip). Python handles the UX (API endpoints, mobile companion, audit trails). Each language doing what it does best.

Foundation Value: Phase 5 is no longer a slide deck. It has a database table, four sync endpoints, nine P2P routes, and a test harness that exercises two-device merge end-to-end.

The Two Crates

tdd005_sync (279 lines) -- The CRDT engine. Four public functions:

The Gateway Wiring

state_sync.py (165 lines) -- Async HTTP client wrapping TDD005 sync endpoints. Methods: new_doc, set, merge, to_json. Each creates a fresh aiohttp.ClientSession with a 5-second timeout. Errors wrapped as StateSyncError.

017_state_docs.sql (10 lines) -- Migration creating state_docs table: user_id TEXT PRIMARY KEY, doc_bytes BLOB NOT NULL, doc_sha256 TEXT NOT NULL, updated_at TEXT NOT NULL.

repo.py (+71 lines) -- StateDocRow dataclass, get_state_doc and upsert_state_doc methods using ON CONFLICT(user_id) DO UPDATE. DSR export integration included.

api.py (+420 lines) -- Three new v2 endpoints (/state/push, /state/pull, /state/json), the full mobile companion HTML page served at /mobile, and StatePushRequest model.

Calendar Fix

ics.py (+60 -14) -- _parse_dt now accepts a tzid parameter and uses zoneinfo.ZoneInfo for best-effort timezone conversion to UTC. Handles YYYYMMDDTHHMM (no seconds) format. Event parsing now extracts TZID from dict-style DTSTART/DTEND values.

Quality Indicators & Standards

  • Test Coverage: test-jarvis-v2.mjs expanded with TDD005 sync endpoint smoke tests -- creates two docs, sets values, merges, verifies the result contains both keys.

Each device pushes its local state. The Gateway loads the canonical document from SQLite, sends both blobs to TDD005 for Automerge merge, persists the result, and returns the merged document. Clients pull whenever they need to sync. No last-write-wins. No conflict resolution callbacks. The CRDT handles it.

The P2P Future

The tdd005_p2p crate is wired into chimera-core with full route handlers but is not yet consumed by the Gateway. It sits there, ready. When it activates, devices will be able to gossip state changes directly over the LAN without routing through the server. The jarvis-v2.2 topic is already subscribed. The mDNS discovery is already running. The message buffer already caps at 2,000 entries with offset-based pagination.

Strategic Architectural Decisions

1. Server-Canonical Model -- The Gateway owns the canonical document. Devices are clients. This avoids the complexity of pure P2P consistency while still getting CRDT merge benefits.

2. Language Boundary as API -- Rust does the CRDT math via HTTP. Python does the orchestration. No FFI. No shared memory. Clean, debuggable, independently deployable.

3. Inline Mobile UI -- The entire companion app lives inside _mobile_companion_html() as a returned string. Zero build step. Zero static assets. One endpoint. Ship it.

Six lines. That's the entire distributed state synchronization algorithm. Load two documents. Merge. Compare heads. Save.

Everything else in this commit -- the 420 lines of api.py, the 165-line async client, the SQLite migration, the mobile companion HTML, the P2P gossip layer, the test harness -- all of it exists to serve these six lines.

The Automerge library does the impossible work: it takes two documents that diverged, finds their common ancestor in the operation history, replays both forks, and produces a result that contains everything from both sides without conflict. And we just call .merge().

This is what good abstractions look like. You build a mountain of infrastructure so that the critical moment -- the actual merge -- is trivial. The complexity doesn't disappear. It moves. It moves into the library, into the transport, into the storage layer, into the UI. And at the center, where the magic happens, there's nothing but clarity.
