Why It Matters

Every any in the Jarvis frontend is dead. Every single one.

This commit takes Jarvis.tsx -- the nerve center of the voice-first AI interface -- and performs a complete type exorcism. Where there were as any casts, there are now proper type guards. Where there was a useRef<any>, there is now a useRef<SpeechRecognitionLike | null>. Where there were blind property accesses on unknown payloads, there are now three helper functions -- isRecord, readString, readNumber -- that validate at runtime before they trust at compile time.

On the backend, five Python files get reformatted to line-length compliance. Black would be proud.

The test suite number ticks from 67.00 to 67.07. All suites green.

The Web Speech Recognition API has no standard TypeScript definitions. The browser exposes webkitSpeechRecognition or SpeechRecognition on the global window -- or neither. Previous code accessed these via (window as any) and typed the recognition ref as useRef<any>.

The sendTranscriptRef Pattern

A subtle but important fix: sendTranscriptRef is a useRef that always holds the latest sendTranscript callback. The Speech Recognition onresult handler calls sendTranscriptRef.current(...) instead of sendTranscript(...) directly. This avoids a stale closure -- the useEffect that sets up recognition runs once (empty dependency array), but the ref always points to the current function.

🏗️ Architecture & Strategic Impact

The Cost of any

Every any in a TypeScript codebase is a hole in the type system. The compiler cannot verify the code around it. Bugs hide behind any because the developer said "trust me" and the compiler obeyed.

In Jarvis.tsx, the any types were concentrated around two surfaces:

  1. WebSocket messages -- arbitrary JSON from the server, parsed into unknown and previously cast to any
  2. Web Speech Recognition API -- a browser API with no standard TypeScript definitions

Both are external boundaries. Both are exactly where type safety matters most, because the data is not under your control.

The isRecord / readString / readNumber trio is not just a one-off fix. It's a pattern. Any future code that needs to safely traverse unknown JSON can use these same functions. They're small enough to inline, general enough to reuse, and strict enough to catch real bugs.

The Python changes are pure formatting. No logic changed. But readability changed dramatically. The struct.pack_into call in voice_basic.py went from a single 200-character line to a 13-line block where every parameter is visible. That's not cosmetic. It's a mutable box that always holds the current value, and closures don't care when you read from a ref -- they get whatever's in the box at call time.

This is the kind of bug that doesn't show up in tests. It shows up at 2 AM when the user has been talking for twenty minutes and the transcript handler is silently sending to a stale WebSocket. The fix is four lines. The bug it prevents is invisible until it isn't.

The any purge is good hygiene. The ref pattern is good engineering."
